[Introduction]

Hey fellow Zombie killers!

I started this thread out of frustration over the ranking system.  Despite being in the top 5000 for all stats and averaging better game rounds than all my friends, I couldn't get past the Skull with Blue Eyes rank.  Unlike other posts this is a comperhensive and interactive effort.  To "crack" the ranking system, I started collecting user data for various ranks and added them to a spreadsheet that let me see all their stats.  Anything from kills per death to revives per down.  After collecting a good chunk of data I was able to view the averages for various ranks.  This allowed me to create a new account and test my general theories.  Within two days I went from bone rank to dagger rank.  Within two days of that, I got shotguns.  Please help to make this system more accurate by posting your stats to this thread anytime you change rank or if you're new to the thread.

If you post your stats please post the following information:

Tallies

  • What are tallies?
    • Tallies indicate how recently and frequently you have played.  If you don't play for a day or two you may lose a tally.
  • How do I get more tallies?
    • You will have to play for more time on a day to aquire tallies.  You will also have to play more days in a row.

[FAQ]

Can you derank?

  • Yes you can be deranked if you play poorly or don't play frequently enough.

Why don't I have blue eyes?

  • Blue eyes are part of the tally system for Skull, Dagger and Shotgun ranks.  The skull on those ranks will have blue eyes if you have played a set amount of time for the previous 5 days.

Why am I losing tallies?

  • If you don't play you will lose tallies.  Some players have reported going down in rank if you don't play enough.  I haven't personally seen this.

Why did I go down in rank?

  • You either didn't play for awhile or you didn't play at the level of the rank you where at.

How do you check your rank?

  • When you play online you will see a rank image next to your player name.  You can also check your rank during a game by bringing up the scoreboard.

What is glitching?

  • Glitching is using anything as an unfair advantage to gain higher stats or rounds.
    • Pathing glitch - Standing in a space where the zombies can't find a path to you.  Also known as an invisible wall glitch.
    • Invincibility glitch - Using a bug in the game to make your player invincibile or unable to take damage.
    • Round glitch - Using a bug in the game to make the rounds go by faster than they should.
    • Out of level glitch - Using a bug in the game to get outside of the map or in to areas the developers didn't intend for players.
    • Equipment glitch - Using equipment or modifying equipment in a way not intended by the developers.

If other players glitch or boost in a game I am in will it affect my rank?

  • Probably not if you don't participate in their cheating.  But I would suggest leaving the game and reporting the offending players.

How does glitching affect your rank?

  • If you are caught glitching your account may be banned temporarily and your leaderboards reset.  Repeat offenders may be banned permanently.  DO NOT GLITCH!

Why am I not going up in rank?

  • You are not playing enough quality games at the stat level required for the next rank.  Review you stats and see where you need to improve.

What is boosting?

  • Boosting is any method of trying to alter your stats by unfair methods.  An example is creating two accounts and having one account that is just downing the player so you can boost your revives on another account.

How does boosting affect your rank?

  • If you are caught boosting your account maybe banned temporarily and your leaderboards reset.  Repeat offenders may be banned permanently.  DO NOT BOOST!

How do you report people for...

  • Cheating?
    • If you find a person cheating in game, you can view them in your recently met players list.  From there you can report them for cheating.
  • Language?
    • If you find a person using offensive language or making racial comments you can view them in your recently met players list.  From there you can report them for offensive language.

Do solo games count toward your rank?

  • Yes!  It just might not count as much as multiplayer public games.

Do custom games count toward your rank?

  • Yes!  It just might not count as much as public matchs.

I have heard if you just get to round 30+ 5 or 6 times in a row that I will get a better rank.  Is that true?

  • Maybe.  It depends on what your current stats are.  Some people may play 6 games to round 30+ and still not over come a poor overall stat average.  If you have played hundreds of games at cross bone skill level, 6 games at shotgun level isn't going to automatically get you to a shotgun rank average.  You have to overcome the average for the account you are playing on to move up.

What's the easiest way to rank up?

  • Start a new account and make sure all your stats match or exceed that of the rank you want to get.  Play at that level for 5 or 6 days in a row and you will most likely have that rank.
  • If you don't want to create a new account, review the averages in the system for the rank you want and preform at that level or better in every game you play.

I got to a new high round, why didn't I rank up?

  • Just getting to a high round won't get you a rank.  Check your stats and see how they compare to the rank you want.  Are there any that are way below that rank?  Pay the most attention to kills per death, kills per down, revives per down, revives per death.

If players leave a game will my stats still count?  Can I still rank up?

  • Yes and yes.  Players leaving a game before the game actually ends from all players dieing is annoying.  But, the stats for that game will still count with the exception to highest round, which doesn't matter in rank anyway.  You can still rank up and if you're the last player in the game, you will be able to pause and go take that bathroom break you need 3 rounds ago.

What is kiting/training zombies?

  • Kiting or training is running in circles or patterns that allow zombies to build up behind you.

Why should I kite/train zombies?

  • Kiting large amounts of zombies helps you in three ways.  First off, you will use less ammo to down a group of zombies because the bullets will pass through multiple zombies inflecting the most damage per bullet.  Secondly, you be able to line up mutliple headshots increasing your chance of getting the "deadshot" persistant perk.  Finally, you can kite zombies until there are no zombies spawning, this will allow you to control the flow of new zombie spawns.  If you don't see zombies spawning, then you can take a couple of shots in to your mob of zombies and look for the new zombies to spawn and add them back to your pile.  Rinse and repeat.

Why is headshot percentage so important?

  • Headshots is a great stat to watch and try to improve.  In early rounds on shot from most guns will down a zombie if shot in the head.  In later rounds it may take two or three shots to the head to kill them.  As rounds progress your guns will become less effective even after upgrading, so it is important to make your ammo go the distance.  Getting headshots is a must in late rounds even with the most powerful of guns.

Why do some people not like the raygun?

  • The raygun is a really powerful weapon and will down zombies quickly.  The problem is that the raygun is really sloppy as far as killing, stats and points.  One shot from the raygun can down a zombie and gain you 50 points and one kill.  It very rarely will give you headshots or multiple hits until later rounds.  A gun like the M8A1, which is a triple round burst, can go through several zombies with highly increased chases of getting headshots.  Personally, I save the raygun until round 35+ where other guns start to fail to effectively down massive amounts of zombies before running out of ammo.

How do I use drops to help me rank up?

  • This is a great question!
    • Carpenter (Hammer) - This drop repairs all the windows on the map and can be picked up at anytime.  You may want to wait till it just disappears before getting just incase a double points drops as well.
    • Double Points (2x) - This drop doubles any points gained while it is active.  Ideally, you get this once you have a large train of zombies.  You can then maximize your points when going for those headshots!  It's also nice to get one of these before using a bomb or carpenter.
    • Instakill (Skull) - This drop allows you to kill zombies with one hit or stab.  This drop is best for newer players.  Experinced players will probably let this drop disappear unless on higher rounds.  You can gain more points by shoting zombies multiple times and aiming for headshots.
    • Bomb (Bomb) - This drop will kill all zombies on the map in a outward circle from the point of the drop.  This drop should only be used at the very end of a round when more points will be gained by players than by shooting the last zombie.  OR it can be used between rounds.  If you really are in a bad situation, it's also a great "OH! ****!" button.

Where are some good places to kite?

  • A lot of this depends on your play style.  Personally, I think tunnel is the best place to run for 4 reasons.  The electric zombie will not spawn in the tunnel because... well because you're in a tunnel.  Not having to deal with him is a blessing.  The tunnel includes the M16A1 as a wall gun and is great for headshots.  Other than the raised platform, the tunnel has no elevation changes.  That makes for less aim adjustment and an easier time pulling off those headshots.  The bus doesn't make a stop in the tunnel so it is less likely to mess up your kiting path.
  • If I wasn't in the tunnel, I would kite at farm for sure.  Once again, there is very little elevation change in farm if you are running where the bus stops.  There is lots of open room to juke and dodge.  The farm is one zone away from the town, which makes banking money easier than tunnel.  You also get the option of having a third gun by storing it in the frig.  That extra gun can come in handy in higher rounds.
  • I would have to put diner as the next best location, IMHO.  There is an MP5 and zombie shield in this zone, allowing you a endless supply of ammo and carnage.  The bus also stops away from the main kiting circle making it less annoying than in other zones.
  • Someones already laid claim to tunnel, farm and diner?  I would suggest either town or bus depot.  The bus depot has the M14 in the starting area and a lot of room to move around.  Be careful of the bus coming to this zone as it will park right in the middle of some prime kiting areas.  Town is great if you are in early rounds or you are trying to get jug/stam, which are both excellent perks.  If you haven't already gotten decent weapons you may be in for a lot of running rather than shooting though, as there are no guns in town unless the box is there.
  • In the end you should probably learn to kite/train zombies in every zone.  Sometimes you don't get to pick when and where the zombies will try to eat you, you will just have to deal with the situation.  It is possible to kite at power, Nacht Der Untoten (German for Night of the Undead) and at the tower.  Practice in different zones can lead to new tatics for your favorite zone.  Experimentation and practice is key.

[Tips]

  • Try not to quit games.  Quiting games means you're not playing to higher rounds.
  • Rack up as many possible kills as possible per down and death.
  • Revive as much as possible.
  • Stack zombies by kiting.
  • Always go for head shots.
  • Don't use the Raygun till later rounds, it's terrible for upping stats.
  • Try for a new high round every game.
  • Try to learn to kite zombies in every zone, this will help in the long run.
  • Have fun!  It's a game!

[Tips for new players]

  • If you don't know what something is or does, ask or don't touch it.
  • Don't turn off the power unless your group is planning on doing the Maxis easter egg.
  • Learn to use wall guns.
  • If you die, watch other players to see how they stay alive.
  • Try to survive on your own.  No one likes someone in their bubble.
  • Don't run through someone elses kiting path, you may both end up dead.
  • Don't shoot other peoples train unless they tell you to.  They did the work, they deserve the points.
  • Don't use granades or explosive weapons.  Crawlers are bad!
  • If you pick up a buildable part, put it on the table!
